Kit Preview : 1/76 MMS Humber FWD Utility Car
About the manufacturer
MMS is the leading 1/76 white metal model brand. The quality of casting and level of detail are comparable to traditional plastic kits, albeit without etched metal detailing. Smaller details such as mirrors are often omitted , and the running gear of tracked vehicles is usually a simplified one piece casting where the guide teeth are backed by a solid metal strengthening strip.
Due to the tight packaging in unprotected plastic bags, parts often come bent or one might say, with pre-built battle damage. Care must be taken to straighten things out lest parts be broken.
About the vehicle
The Humber FWD (Four Wheel Drive) Heavy Utility, nicknamed the "Box", was a British staff car. It was used from 1941 onwards.
Here are two thorough photo galleries, one of the standard model, the other of a cut down tropical version.
About the kit
Nice little kit without major apparent issues. There is ample room for detailing based on the photo walkarounds. Before going overboard bear in mind that not much will be seen of the interior with the thick window posts and small rear windows.
The exhaust pipe is not provided. The silencer is under the left side of the chassis with the pipe protruding at a right angle just forward of the rear wheel. Click here for a picture illustrating the point.
